I can appreciate most cars. Really. The engineering that goes into even today’s plastic clad look alikes is something to marvel at (doesn’t mean I would own or drive them, however).

If you put a gun to my head and asked me what my favorite car is, I’d have to say a classic Ford Mustang. Ford introduced the mustang in as a 1965 Model in 1964 and made what I would consider classics until 1970. You can find them with v8’s and they’re rear wheel drive. They were designed to be an american sports car accessible by everyone. They are one of the few cars that everyone likes. If you pulled into cars in coffee with even a 1965 coupe, everyone from the Honda to the Ferrari owner will appreciate it (even your girlfriends Mom will most likely approve of it). They were raced across the globe. The combination of a lightweight, rear wheel drive v8 platform is perfect.

If you want a V8 manual car for less than $5k that isn’t a complete rust bucket, be prepared to do some wrenching. At least you know that you aren’t going to lose a dime on the car and you’ll have a non-pretentious classic you can enjoy.

Here is a list of classic mustangs for sale for $5k or less that have both a v8 and manual transmission. If you don’t need a manual transmission (we all NEED manual transmissions but maybe you are going to swap in a t-5), then your options open up considerably.
